Kuwait’s Ministry of Health is nearing completion of new fees guidelines for healthcare services for expats in the country. The measure’s goal is to decrease spending and mitigate the consequences of the budget deficit that the country is on course for.
The measure has attracted both supporters and detractors. Some see it as a timely measure that will cover the massive expense the country incurs in by providing healthcare for non-citizens. But some lawmakers believe that an increase in health fees for expats will eventually lead to an increase for citizens as well and others are calling for special fees for fellow Arab expats.
The new fees were originally supposed to be introduced in February but the measure was delayed. However, informed sources have denied there were any intentions to scrap the new regulations. Health Minister Harbi should announce modalities of implementation within a few days.
